The Remote Handling Group is a component of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. The group plans and executes Shutdown Maintenance & Installation Operations within the JET Machine. The latest shutdown, in which I played a key role, saw 14 months of operations for the group. My role was in the support of operations within the Torus and as such had a team of nine mechanical technicians working under my supervision with others called on as required.
Key responsibilities:
- Identification and configuration of Remote Handling tooling and equipment required for mock-up and shutdown operations;
- Planning and management of equipment supplies for mock-up and shutdown operations;
- Author of specifications and technical documents for the use and maintenance of tooling;
- Supervision of workshop staff undertaking the maintenance and preparation of Electro-Mechanical equipment within Beryllium and Radiation controlled areas;
- Interface between RH and other groups on issues relating to container movements, logistics and other matters relating to the EP Shutdown;
- Inspection and approval of assemblies to be remotely installed within the JET Vessel (including site visits to manufacturers in the UK, US & Europe);
- Cataloguing and control of access to the RH Group Operations and Equipment Databases;
- Management of Controlled Maintenance Area;
- Qualified Risk Assessor;
- Qualified Area Waste Officer;
- Qualified Radioactive Materials Co-Coordinator;
