Ian Thomson
Ian has over 25 years of experience in design-, procurement- and installation planning in a variety of industries namely structural steel buildings, railway, mining; opencast and underground projects, Upstream oil and gas – FPSO and rig modifications and more recently oil refinery projects. All projects that Ian has worked on have been schedule driven to achieve an operational need. He has a strong background in design and procurement planning including stints on site. He is familiar with the Primavera and MS project toolset and has more recently become closely involved in setting up a project control office incorporating estimating, scheduling, cost control, risk management and document control systems and processes at the refinery for a portfolio of projects.
He is particularly interested in finding and training up young planners to fulfil project controls duties and become fully fledged members of any project team and hence the interest in GPPCD and the approved career path for project controls personnel.
Ian was a member of the now non-operational Planning Engineers Organisation (PEO) and contributed certain articles to them. He also completed a Masters Degree in Project Management where his final report was “What are the success criteria for projects undertaken in a petrochemical environment?”. He presented his findings at the Inaugural Project Management International Conference in Cape Town recently.
Ian is an external examiner for UCT's Masters degree in Project Management.
