In the recent discussion of BIM in the UK there is little or no discussion of how this new technology will disrupt the way work is done in design and construction. It will.
In this presentation Alan Mossman will present some observations that draw on relevant theory, principles and experience in the US and open out a discussion of participant experience and fears to date in the UK.
Beginning with a brief history of lean in construction and design, Alan will talk about aspects of the current state of design in the context of Integrated Project Delivery, a seven-year-old US procurement route in which BIM is crucial. This will include:
- Target Value Design
- Set-based Design
- ROI for BIM
- Evidence-based design
Along the way he will mention some of the issues and fears associated with the adoption of BIM that have emerged – and some wasteful workarounds.

An adviser on lean transformation and Last Planner in design and construction, Alan trained as an architect and then in management & organisation development and has been a sociotechnical systems consultant since 1988. He only returned to construction in 2001 building on his knowledge and understanding of collaboration, systems thinking, variation, quality and lean. Based in UK, he coaches people using Last Planner and involved in lean transformations primarily in construction and design. In the last couple of years he has worked with teams, projects and organisations in the UK, Estonia, France, Eire, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa and Australia.
Alan is regular speaker and facilitator at lean construction conferences and seminars in the US & Europe. He is co-editor of the Lean Construction Journal, a member of the Lean Construction Institute in both the US & UK, the International Group for Lean Construction & the European Group for Lean Construction. He was a founding Director of the Lean Construction Institute UK, stepping down in March 2010.
Alan has taught the lean construction module on the MSc programme at Loughborough University and is developing an MSc in Lean Design & Construction with Professor Christine Pasquire at Nottingham Trent University, both in the UK. His research interests include ‘who makes money out of waste in construction?’ and the issues surrounding lean transformation at the level of the project and the organisation in construction.
