WHY EVEN THE MOST EXPERIENCED PLANNERS SOMETIMES GET IT WRONG |
| Estimating the time, duration and cost of an activity is a task that maintenance planners need to repeat every day. However, we all know that estimation is extremely difficult, especially when it comes to the complexity associated with industrial turnarounds and maintenance. But there is more to it than complexity. There is a little known phenomenon that can dramatically skew the judgement of even the most experienced planner. We tested this phenomenon during one of our iPlan training courses with 2 groups of seasoned planning professionals, asking them to estimate something WAY outside their comfort zone. Group 1 was asked: Was Gandhi older or younger than 35 when he died? Group two were asked: Was Gandhi older or younger than 114 when he died? - Group 1 guessed on average 50 years.
- Group 2 guessed on average 81 years.
The actual answer is 78. Do you know why there was such a difference? Click here to find out. |
