Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Hi,

I’m a software developer and I’ve just developed a range of time planning / logging software using a timeline as the visual interface.

When the software is used for Project management style planning, the timing plan can be structured into a number of easy to manage layers and data, such as reports, meeting minutes, text, images, video clip etc can be save directly back to the plan.

The software isn’t Project management software, it has been designed come into play once the project goes ‘live’ to manage the data created by the work activities and give a much clearer user interface.

The software is currently being used in the automotive industry for managing the many tests required in validating new vehicles.

In the automotive industry the following happens.

Stage 1
A Project management tool such as MS Project is used to define the broad project requirement, manpower and budget.
Once this has been ‘sign-off’ and the project goes live, the ‘event data’ is exported from the management tool into our software app.

Stage 2
Now our software is a project log.
As work commences and testing starts data generated is now logged.
The software has a richer, more user-friendly, visual interface, which can be layered into related groups such as departments, individuals etc.
All data generated by each task activity is then saved back to the test plan.

Stage 3
As the project progresses, reports can be run detailing progress.
These reports can be run on all tests or by department or discipline etc.

Main advantages
A much improve visual interface allows the test plan to be sub divided into manageable sections – you don’t see everything all the time, just what you need when you need it.

As results and work notes are saved back to the plan, all members of the team have visibility to all results and change history.

The software is based on a database and there is a powerful search function allowing data to be easily found.

Does anybody have any opinions or thoughts on now projects are managed and especially project data?

Would this software be useful in other industries?
