Cost & Planner, Mott MacDonald, Thames Water AMP5
Project Description
Thames Water AMP4 -5 year Capital expenditure programme in UK Water industry. I worked on projects involving repair and replacement of existing water mains to reduce leakage, the £250m Thames Gateway Water Treatmant Plant (desalination plant to provide additional treated water capacity during drought conditions), and also PR09 -The internal work Thames Water did to preapre thier submissions for OFFWAT 2009 Price Review and determination, which sets the scope and costs for the next 5-year AMP cycle (AMP6).
Role & Responsibilities
My role was as a "Cost and Planner" combined the traditional roles of cost controller and client planner: Monitor contractor progress; forecast & control internal client project costs; track and claim regulatory milestones; raise orders and process invoices; control financial and schedule data on client management systems.
Additionally acted as a lead planner within the organisation: Raising standard of planning via training, guidance notes, and one-to-one coaching; developing and implementing system for monitoring and reporting regulatory outputs via Open Plan scheduling software, and providing planning support to high-profile projects such as TGWTP and PR09.
Lessons Learned
Programmes of repeatable, relatively simple works are best managed via line of balance / productivity methodology, rather than CPM. VOWD is a poor measure of progress compared to EV, and significantly more game-able.
