Senior Planner, Atkins Rail, North London Line
Currently employed as Project Planner in the York Rail office of Atkins Ltd., working on bid and project programmes, including Peterborough Lineside Renewals; Signalling enhancements on West Coast Main Line routes and Birmingham International; Telecomms FTN cable and route surveys; and Multi-discipline work on Kettering South track reinstatement, Birmingham New Street, Edinburgh Waverley, and Nuneaton Chord. All projects are controlled using P3e, with cost and resource loading.
Prior to this I was seconded to the Enhancements planning team in Network Rail, York in a project controls based role, looking after a portfolio of 30 projects ranging from £200k to over £50m, ensuring schedule and cost updates were entered accurately into P3e, programmes were robust with appropriate levels of cost loading, and developing new project programmes following the Guide to
Railway Investment Projects (GRIP) process. I improved the project controls reporting for periodic cost reviews and developed an action plan for project managers to keep track of tasks within large portfolios.
Projects included feasibilitiy studies and optioneering for the Tram Train Trial with Northern Trains; the design and implementation of a new National Freight Engineering Centre near Sheffield; design development for Line Speed Increases on various UK rail routes, for a new rail ‘flyover’ (grade separation) at Hitchin, and for station improvements at St Albans; development of a Fast Track project initiative which identified projects suitable for accelerated authorisation and procurement for design development. I developed a new project template for delivering all essential project requirements in a compacted timescale. Projects included car park extensions, modular platform extensions, line speed improvements and new freight connections.
