One of the requests in this thread was to allow us to lock and un-lock specific threads to stop people making further posts.
In between bashing out a people-mover design programme this afternoon (and mainly cos it is Friday and I am feeling extra-lazy) I amended the scripts to include for this. As moderators you should see a small "padlock" icon next to the edit buttons.
Hope it is as you envisaged. Happly Locking & Un-Locking !
Your first message had an extra "<" in the hyperlink which for some reason created a new column in the table.
The forum is scripted from scratch. We initially went with a standard forum but they charged us on a monthly basis. Although this was only a small amount it seemed silly to pay for something that could be done for free. The other advantage being that we can customise things as we wish. Perhaps we should have gone with an off-the shelf version, dunno. My challenge now, being to improve things such this becomes everyones favourite!
For now I will create a button to send moderators a private (BCC) message, i.e. give an entry form which will generate a private email to the listed moderators.
I will look at the email alert for which you can opt in / out of. I appologise if you get some odd emails from me in the development process!
Perhaps I should create a page on the site that shows requested and in-progress site upgrades and development projects. I am having trouble keeping my head around everything we (and other users) are suggesting.
Wow, something went really askew there. The link I put in converted to the date and the edit button was way out on the right. Is that a bug in the system ?
Email alert I would not like an alert for each new post, although would not fight it as they can all be diverted into a dedicated folder.
Send private message to mod I agree, this would be useful. Especially after we intervene in a thread.
Third thingy No thoughts either way. But it does raise the point (elsewhere ?) about being able to see the thread you are replying to.
James, are you building this forum using blocks from open-source software or are you writing from scratch ? Excuse my terminology, Im sure there are proper ways to describe it all. Have you considered switching to a commercially available BB software ? How much would it cost and how would PP then pay for it ?
IMHO the forum interface I like the most is this one
I have had to bite my tongue when I have read some of the messages
Any specific examples?
One more suggestion: allow moderators to lock and unlock threads. If a thread is locked, the "post reply" button should not be available.
This has not been necessary yet to cut off any heated discussions, but it may come in handy down the road. It would also be useful for threads like the first survey thread where there was a time limit for input.
Email alert for a mesage in all categories / or a specified category - The initial idea came from the fact that I was interrested in new posts or threads in (a) certain area(s),just for my own interrest.
An overview of all new post is already in the "Home" screen as a link.
Email alert for a mesage in all categories / or a specified category - I think the idea was to alert moderators that new messages were posted so that we can ensure they meet the unofficial Planning Planet "guidelines". At this time the volume of posts is low enough that I would not mind an e-mail alert for every post in every forum, but I can forsee the need to allow moderators the option to limit their monitoring to a subset of forums.
Send Moderators a private message button - Great! Send messages to our e-mail addresses. This way, we can respond easily should we choose to do so.
Private Messaging - OK. Most commercial forum software appears to set up private forums for each member to process private messages. So the messaging function works just like the rest of the public forums, except that posts and replies are sent to the appropriate members private forum. It sounds like you are talking about something else here...
Firstly. Well done on GREAT moderation (moderator?) in our forums. I have had to bite my tongue when I have read some of the messages. You have all handled things really well!!!
Email alert for a mesage in all categories / or a specified category - this would not be too difficult. The hardest part would be creating the unser interface. It could however, be done v.easily for a specific list of users, i.e. moderators.
Send Moderators a private message button this could be done v.easily while keeping your email address private if you so wished. Or the said message could arrive as a new forum message in this private area.
Private Messaging I had a man from New Zealand show me an ASP script that could be installed as a chat function. I never took it very far. I will have a play about with it and see what could be on offer.
I hope the above answers all of your current points. Let me know what you guys would prefer. None of the above sounds like more than an hours work, so no problems.

It sounds like we are eventually going to request the PP team to implement a full featured forum system ala PowerBoard, vBulletin, Ikonboard, etc.
Private Messaging would be great. However, I think this might be a bit of work for the PP team. An alternative might be to offer a special e-mail button for moderators to send e-mails to the addresses listed in the membership directory.
I agree, but it only allows us to communicate amongst ourselves. What if a disgruntled PPer wants to complain about how we moderated his / her post ?
On the other hand if we add a listing to our emails, we may get a lot of rubbish.
Perhaps best would be a "Send Moderators a Private Message" type function. That could be posted to the forum (as a new thread), or posted to an Inbox (new feature, sorry james).
Thoughts ?

E-mails for all messages in the Private forum is a good idea Ed. If that were implemented, I dont think we would need a separate e-mail solution for gathering input on a survey - just post a message in this Private forum.

Perhaps you could enlist some scripting help from other PPers ? Beyond me, but someone may be able to.

I just found out that you can see "Contains new posts made after last visit", when reviewing the forum category. This is already a big help.
I support the "Send Moderators a Private Message" type function idea?
How about the rest?
(would already be handy in this thread!!!)
Great guys,
Ed
