Maybe using Materials Resources can do the trick within MS Project. Guess a piece of equipment that produces volume of work is not a material resource, or a person that produces volume of work is not a material resource. Kind of confusing to me, good for the MS Project enthusiast.  Here we say " Al pan pan y al vino vino".

Material Resources

You will be limited to non-leveling resources, you will not be able to model resource leveling with material resources if these are modeling consumable resources similar to other software. Not sure as I do not use MS Project for other purpose than to read schedules developed by others. Whenever I start using it the frustration is such I lose any interest on it.

Just remember GIGO (GARBAGE IN GARBAGE OUT) still the issues with wrong float calculations after resource leveling will always be present in MS Project.

Juan Luis,

Besides wrong mathematics for some metrics such as float values after resource leveling I do not understand the definition of work by MS Project, they use hours instead of a volume of work. Therefore what would be the units for productivity productive hours per hours? Using an arbitrary standard?

I guess MS Project people got the idea of work units from time studies, a concept not best suited for describing work in CPM Schedules or even Quantity Take offs. Maybe because MS Project was developed by IT people not knowledgeable of how industry define and quantify work. Can you imagine if instead of 100 CM of concrete the work quantity would read 500 hours? I do not understand it.

If you stick with MS Project you will have to live with the wrong math and the wrong concepts of work as not all resources produce the same amount of work per hour, even when talking about the same type of work. A 20 cm truck moves more dirt than a 10 cm truck in the same amount of time.

You can still use MS Resource Usage Tables displaying work and add a Custom Field column to display your units.

What you are looking is a very basic issue those who can swallow MS Project ways must have already found a workaround.

Best Regards,

Rafael

Suggest someone to create a Latin America Group where we can discuss in Spanish the issues with others not proficient in the English language without being intrusive to others. It is very advantageous to be in an international forum as this is the place to exchange ideas with people all over the world. We shall not rule out those other international members but provide the appropriate place.
