Nice explanation. (eventhough Copy and Back up purpose is different) I had an experience of receiving a backup copy of p3 files but could not be open..... telling something is missing...... the best way is to choose all the relevant files, zip it and email it.

Copying a program to a clean directory works quite well, if the purpose is to e-mail the program, but zip up all the files. A backup works just a well if you click the right buttons, but if you do not the recipient of the backup may not get the same layout you wanted him to have. If you have MS outlook running, it is quit simple, just e-mail it.
The point is EDD, explain why you ask the question, if you are just trying to make sure you do not lose data, I prefer the copy option, just make sure you make a new new directory to save the schedule if you want to use the same project name.

Yes, Backup is mostly used email or transferring purpose (earlier in the era of Finest hour, backup was an efefctive tool of carrying project schedules from PC->PC or from one place to another. It reduces the number of files & also the size of the schedule to be transferred.
Fot creating targets, it is desirable to do so from Menu-> Tools->Utilities-->Targets--> OK rather than copy. in one stroke you create a target project whereas you copy & then assign it as a target (one additional via the copying process).
Copy has the option of copying selected activities (filter-wise), add characters before or after the act IDs.
Additionally one more feature of copying is " you can change the planning unit, then use Global change to divide/multiply by the requisite factor". Also make sure to change the Lag/lead durations thru export/import feature.

A Copy is when you make a Copy
A backup is When you Back Up
A Copy is Mainly used for changes or example for Targets
A Backup is maily used for email. (1 File)
You must Restore a Backup before you can use it as a Target
(A Copy is basicly a Restored Backup File from a Backup)
