Mr. Ming Tse gave you a definite answer and yes, Alex is right in saying that if your WBS is only 2 level, you can make a global change.



Another thing to add as well is maybe you also check your activity ID coding so you can have more options in organizing your resources.

If you WBS is only 2-3 level use global change is good enough

Export the WBS code by RA onto Excel, re-value the description to fit the classification, then import as resources dictionary.

I agree somehow with you. I don’t know why you will have to copy activity codes into WBS



As far as the question is concerned,Resource loading from both WBS or Activity Code can be done,

but the difference I see (since ’m using both systems at work) is that I find WBS to be more rigid and Activity Codes to be more flexible.



Anyway, each system has its advantages over the other on a case to case basis.



Example:



If you want to see clearly the contents of your programme in one list: WBS is good



00 Project Name

00.01 Excavation

00.01.02 Area 1

00.02 Piling

00.02.01 Area 1



But as you can notice, in WBS you have to duplicate typing "Area 1" , In Activity Code. You can type "Area 1" in LOCATION and use it in Excavation and Piling. But as your activity code grows in nos. , sometimes, it is confusing to find "where you put which codes where?" Unless of course, you have a very good structured coding, which goes back to WBS structure. JUST A THOUGHT

hmmm.... i read it back and im still convinced he wants to turn activity codes into WBS ?



if you want to turn WBS into activity codes just reverse my procedure (you will need to define the activity codes with a string length the same as your WBS structure) and use the Mid() function in excel instead of concatenate :D



One thing to look out for tho when transfering WBS to Activity codes is that WBS levels are not always uniform enough... Level 1 will usually be the project, however level 2, 3, 4... may contain mixed data types within the one level

the best way to do it would be to use export / import



here is an example:



Firstly set up your WBS structure. For example if you want to duplicate the activity codes "Project Number" and "Phase" then set up your WBS structure so that level one is the string length of your "Project Number" Activity Code and level two is the string length of your "Phase" activity code.



Next create an export specification with Activity ID, Activity codes and WBS code. Run the export and open it in excel. Use the "concatenate" function to join the two activity codes in the WBS code feild and save the file.



Back in P3 set up an import specification to import this file.



Finally populate the WBS dictionary with the code titles (you may use batch to do this but it would only be worth it if the data entry of this information would be too painful)

There is no automatic way but you can use export/import, modifying the exported file (splitting the codes) with a bit of imagination particularly on the structure. You also have to re-type the descriptions in the activity codes definition. The problem you may encounter is that there may not be enough fields in the activity codes. If that is the case, since this operation is not routine, you can duplicate the project and delete some of the activity codes to produce the desired report. This is a little tedious at the first but once the activity codes are defined and the export file are correctly structured, the next time would be much easier (by "transfer" activity codes and direct export/import to the duplicated schedule). This is just a suggestion for an immediate solution. Maybe others out there may suggest a more simple solution.
