Total Float at Completed Activities

The discussions may induce a concept that a completed activity still have total float?

If do, the value will change after scheduling and levelling. If no change in value, either software bug (forget to blank the field or invisable the value for a completed activity) or other reason.

To carry Ron’s point one step further, Primavera’s decision to hide the total float on completed activities is one of the many reasons it is difficult to analyze float in a P3 schedule when there is out-of-seqence progress. Even though an activity is completed (out-of-seqence), it’s zero day remaining duration is still calculated according to the network logic (assuming retained logic is being used), with early & late dates , and total float being calculated.

It is a little known fact that all activities have a total float computation. Primavera just elects to not show it (with the exception of the fact mentioned below.) You cannot calculate a CPM schedule with out-of-sequence progress without including the completed activities in your computation. You ignore the fact that they are complete and just consider the remaining duration (zero.) Afterwards, Primavera forces the actual dates into the early and late fields (even they have forgotten why they do this) and blank out the total float display.

Since the Total Float is the amount of time you can delay an activity without delaying the project, then the TF for 100% completed activities is nil. You cannot delay an activity that has been completed already, can you?

It seems it is the only location to view a hidden value, not to other screens and reports. I think it is a bug on P3.

The field keeps the latest TF value, it should be clear once completed.

Further, the value is grey is correct since TF is not editable.

If an activity is completed, the TF cell must be blank since TF to an completed activity is meaningless.

Irrespective of whatever planning tool you use, Total Float of a completed activity will always be = 0.
