Negative Total Float

Could it be that you have subprojects? If so, then you may have different Must Finish By dates and different Data Dates.

Check out: Tools, Schedule, Options, Advanced Tab, Project Group Scheduling as this also affects how the project is schedule.

Its not just the Project Finish Date that might cause a negative total float. An out of order Late Finish constraint imposed on any activity can also cause Negative TF.

When you encounter a negative TF, check for any activity assigned with a Late Constraint - Finish. Removing all of it will remove the -ve TF.

Dear all,

I got same problem with Bruce.

I have done all your advice, but I still find the negative total float. Mostly of activities have negative float and Milestone as well. For your information, this schedule was prepared by my friend so that make me difficult to trace it.

What is the problem with the schedule, any body can help me ?

You just need to go to File, project overview and change your must finish by. other i think you have to check on the constraint
-good luck

Bruce,

you must add to an activity to your project,it is name "Project end", or "project completion date"

and make it is type as a "finish milestion"

then , in the overveiw window or p3, you must put the Project must finish = to the "project completion date".

this ensure that you will not have any confusion about the calculated end date and the must finish.

because the calculated end date will be related to the activity "project completion date"

I hope could explain what is in my mind.

regards

Ali

Ah Hah!...I was right!! It was a blinding flash of the obvious! In Project Overview the must finish date was before the project’s scheduled finish date. Once changed and a review of the schedule printout, all is OK!

Thanks Greg and Mohd for your timely responses.

Warm regards,

Bruce

one last step, which might help.

in P3 menu, go to Tools then Schedule, then schedule window will open, enable the 3 options, then, ok.

u choose, to print the schedule report. in that report, u should be able to see the accurate cause of the negative float.

regards, mohd

You have covered most things, but what application are you using? Is there any global set-up you have not checked, like project overview in P3, that has a must finish by date.

What about product support?

Sory for lack of answers.
