Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Hanson,

What you are showing is Resource Detail Tab...

You need to select the Resource Usage Spreadsheet to show you the Number of Resources for each Activity.

Hope this will help.

Beware it is not the same

  • 3 resources A working 8 hours per day during 6 days = 3x8x6 = 144 resource hours
  • 8 resources A working 6 hours per day during 3 days = 8x6x3 = 144 resource hours
  • 6 resources A working 3 hours per day during 8 days = 6x3x8 = 144 resource hours
  • 6 resources A working 4 hours per day during 6 days = 6x4x6 = 144 resource hours
  • 6 resources A working 6 hours per day during 4 days = 6x6x4 = 144 resource hours
  • 1 resource A working 8 hours per day during 18 days = 1x8x18 = 144 resource hours
  • 2 resource A working 7 hours per day + 2 resource A working 5 hours per day during 6 days = 2x7x6 + 2x5x6 = 144  resource hours

That they add the same total man-hours does not mean the model will be the same, even if activity total resource hours comes out to be the same the different partial assignments might have impact on resource leveling.

Can get more complicated when variable resource loading is needed as to make better use of available and idle resources. A common situation PM must solve as to keep manpower busy, better learn how to deal with the above and with variable resource loading or the PM will set aside your CPM as useless and do what he has to do using manual assignments that will not be as good as if determined with the help of the computer.

I have seen many jobs scheduled without any consideration to good resource planning, at times no consideration at all. In such cases the PM will have to improvise as to keep in control idle resources. Because schedule progress is always changing resource assignments will have to be continuously monitored and managed, better make use of good computer models. It is not like many believe you resource load at the beginning and that is all.

Hanson,

Dont change the Max Units/time or the Default Units/Time.

Change only in the Resource details the Remaining Units/Time as you requires.

If you dont find the Remaining Units/Time in the Resource Detail.. right click the resource details window to select the columns you need to add...

Dear Raymund de Laza ,

I have Max units/Time & Default units/Time... so, which one I have to change? I tried to change both but still have very high oveallocation also my schedule is 5000 activities so it's very hard to change or assign more resources for every single activity.. So, any idea?

Thank you,

Hanson

Hanson,

You are assigning a Role but not a Resource.
For number counting purposes, you can increase the units/time of the Role (Engineer).

Set your Unit of Time into day, then on the Resource details set 3 as Units/ Time for the Role.

But if you use specific resources such as Engr. Hanson, Engr. Obama and Engr. Taher, then it is more realistic.

Hope this will help.

Hi Hanson

You can do both. I suggest to assign the resources more then ones. So separate resources for engineers and for labor. This give you more flexibility in accurately resource leveling. Make sure that multiple resources are created under the resource / enterprise.

Trusting this helps
