Hi All,

I’m using budget cost as the weight factor for % complete calculation.

Now I have to include more detailed activities into the schedule. I’m thinking of changing the current activities to hammock activities summarizing the detailed activities.

This way I will only track progress on the detailed activities. EVA will be done based on earned value of the hammock activities. Actual percent complete of the hammocks can be adjusted with unlinked rem. duration/schedule percent complete.

Do any of you have experience with this approach, is it recommendable?

Your ideas will be very much appreciated.
Thanks!
Heinz

I have managed some projects using P3 to produce all the EV data.

I would have Cost Resources with cost and no units against the WBS activity, I prefer WBS to Hammocks.

I then had Resources & hours without costs against the activities to get a forecast of resource requirements. The Actual hours imported against the WBS activities from a timesheet system.

I had difficulty getting the ninth Autocost rule to work in the way the manual said it should work so I just imported the Actual Costs, Actual Hours and Costs to Complete after I rescheduled the project.

There is an article on my web site showing some of my work.

Is it recommended, it is a lot of work but the results were good.

Heinz,

It is a good exploratory idea! Frankly, haven’t tried it but knowing that hammock supposedly represents a summary of several activities, the resulting earned value may not be what the real progress of the group of activities represents. It can be done alright but the earned value will be some kind of a "cheat", the EVA will not be realistic.

I wouldn’t recommend it. It is a very good idea though...
